Toronto FC adds veteran goalkeeper William Yarbrough to strengthen squad depth
Toronto FC added veteran depth in goal by signing William Yarbrough, a former Liga MX champion and MLS Cup winner, on a deal through the 2026 season with a 2027 option.
Toronto FC continues to reinforce its roster ahead of the upcoming MLS season, announcing the signing of experienced goalkeeper William Yarbrough. The Mexican-American shot-stopper has agreed to a deal that runs through the end of the 2026 Major League Soccer season, with a club option extending into the 2027 spring segment.
Experience to balance a young goalkeeping group
At 36, Yarbrough arrives in Toronto with more than a decade of professional experience across Liga MX and MLS. The move is designed to complement Toronto FC’s existing group of young goalkeepers, adding leadership, competition and a proven presence in the locker room.
General manager Jason Hernandez highlighted Yarbrough’s professionalism and influence as key reasons behind the signing, pointing to his ability to raise standards across the squad both on and off the pitch.
A career shaped in Liga MX and MLS
Yarbrough’s professional journey began in Mexico with C.F. Pachuca, where he signed his first contract at just 16 years old. After multiple loan spells, he found stability with Club León, becoming a long-term starter and playing a central role in back-to-back Liga MX championships during the Apertura 2013 and Clausura 2014 seasons. Over eight years with León, Yarbrough recorded 52 shutouts in 203 appearances.
His move to MLS came in 2020 with the Colorado Rapids, where he worked under current Toronto FC head coach Robin Fraser. During four seasons in Colorado, Yarbrough made 107 appearances across all competitions, posting 35 clean sheets and helping the Rapids reach the MLS Cup Playoffs twice.
Recent success and championship pedigree
Following stints with the San Jose Earthquakes and Inter Miami CF, Yarbrough arrives in Toronto fresh off a title-winning campaign. In 2025, he was part of the Inter Miami squad that captured both the Eastern Conference crown and the MLS Cup, adding further championship experience to his résumé.
Even in shorter spells, Yarbrough has continued to deliver reliable performances, including a standout 11-save match in 2023 that ranked as the highest single-game total by an MLS goalkeeper that season.
International experience and leadership
At the international level, Yarbrough has earned three caps with the United States Men’s National Team, making his debut in a friendly against Switzerland in 2015. While his international appearances were limited, they reflect the level of trust placed in him during his peak years.
What Yarbrough brings to Toronto FC
For Toronto FC, Yarbrough’s signing is about stability and depth. His familiarity with MLS attackers, calm presence under pressure and history of success in multiple leagues provide valuable insurance over a long season.
As the club continues to reshape its roster, Yarbrough steps into a role that blends mentorship with competition, reinforcing a position that often proves decisive over the course of a campaign.
