Niklas Dorsch undergoes surgery after suffering facial fracture in Toronto FC draw

Toronto FC midfielder Niklas Dorsch has undergone successful surgery to repair a facial fracture suffered during Wednesday night’s 3-3 draw against Charlotte FC at BMO Field.

The club confirmed Friday that Dorsch underwent the procedure on Thursday, August 20, one day after sustaining the injury following contact to his cheekbone in the 91st minute of the match.

Toronto FC did not provide a timetable for the German midfielder’s recovery.

The injury came at the end of an eventful night for Dorsch, who had scored Toronto’s dramatic equalizer just moments earlier. His 90th-minute goal completed an unlikely comeback for a Reds side that had been trailing 3-1 and playing with 10 men following Walker Zimmerman’s second-half red card.

It was Dorsch’s second goal in as many MLS matches and continued an impressive start to his career in Toronto.

Dorsch injured moments after scoring Toronto’s equalizer

Toronto had entered the final stages of Wednesday’s match searching for a way back after Dániel Sallói cut Charlotte’s advantage to 3-2 in the 77th minute.

Dorsch then delivered in the 90th minute. Derrick Etienne Jr. and Jackson Gilman combined in the buildup before the midfielder found the net to level the match at 3-3.

Shortly afterwards, however, Dorsch suffered the contact to his face that ultimately required surgery.

Head coach Robin Fraser revealed after the match that the injury appeared serious and that Dorsch was heading to hospital for further evaluation.

“Niklas [Dorsch] probably has a fracture,” Fraser said following the draw. “He’s on his way to the hospital to get a CT scan.”

Fraser was particularly frustrated that the incident did not result in disciplinary action during the match.

“He’s got a dent in his face and not even a card,” Fraser said. “How is it possible that someone can have his face broken?”

The club’s update two days later confirmed the fracture and successful surgery.

Strong start to life with Toronto FC interrupted

The injury comes only weeks into Dorsch’s Toronto FC career.

The 28-year-old joined the Reds in late July after spending the majority of his career in Germany, including extensive experience in the Bundesliga. He had made only three MLS appearances before Wednesday’s injury but had already scored twice.

His first Toronto goal came in the club’s previous match before he followed it with the late equalizer against Charlotte, becoming the first time he had scored in consecutive MLS matches.

Dorsch had also quickly established himself as an important presence within Toronto’s midfield.

Following Wednesday’s match, 20-year-old Markus Cimermancic spoke about the impact the German has already had on the younger players around him.

“Truly as a young player, he’s always talking to me, always trying to help me, help me get in the right spots,” Cimermancic said. “He’s helped me so much just in two weeks and I feel very confident in playing with him on the field.”

Dorsch’s absence now creates another challenge for a Toronto side attempting to climb the Eastern Conference standings during the second half of the season.

Toronto FC faces quick turnaround against Inter Miami

Toronto emerged from the Charlotte match with a point after one of its most dramatic comebacks of the season.

Cimermancic scored his first goal for the club in the 14th minute before Charlotte established a 3-1 advantage. After Zimmerman was sent off in the 56th minute, Toronto responded through Sallói and Dorsch to rescue the 3-3 draw.

Goalkeeper Luka Gavran also made seven saves, matching his MLS career high and helping keep Toronto within reach as Charlotte threatened to extend its advantage.

The result moved TFC to 21 points with a 4-7-9 record.

There will be little time to recover before another significant test. Toronto FC travels to Florida to face Lionel Messi and Inter Miami on Saturday night, with Dorsch now unavailable following Thursday’s surgery.

Toronto FC said it is supporting the midfielder and wished him a speedy recovery, but no further details regarding his potential return have been announced.
