Inter Toronto held to 1-1 draw by FC Supra as playoff gap remains

Inter Toronto FC and FC Supra du Québec entered their latest Canadian Premier League meeting knowing that a victory could provide a much-needed boost to their playoff hopes. Instead, a 1-1 draw left both clubs with more work to do as the regular season moves forward.

Julian Altobelli gave Inter Toronto an early advantage before Loïc Kwemi responded for Supra in the second half, with goalkeeper Ivan Pavela playing a crucial role in helping the hosts secure a point during a difficult final half-hour.

The result leaves Supra eight points away from the playoff positions, while Inter Toronto remains nine points back.

Inter head coach Mauro Eustáquio acknowledged afterwards that the outcome was frustrating given the importance of the match.

“Disappointed with the result,” Eustáquio said, although he described the draw as “fair.”

“We knew it would be a difficult match and, as we always say, we needed a good performance. We know we started well and then had some difficult moments, but we never stopped working, we never stopped believing, and we will continue to work and fight.”

Altobelli gives Inter Toronto the early advantage

Inter needed only 14 minutes to break through.

The opportunity developed after a long throw into Supra’s defensive area was not properly cleared. The loose ball eventually reached Steffen Yeates near the edge of the penalty area, and the midfielder quickly found an unmarked Altobelli in front of goal.

The Inter Toronto forward took advantage of the space and finished past goalkeeper Jonathan Milli to put the home side ahead 1-0.

Despite conceding early, Supra struggled to turn possession into meaningful opportunities. Inter limited the visitors’ ability to connect with their attacking players and looked to exploit space on the counterattack.

Clear chances were limited at both ends for much of the opening 45 minutes. Supra finally forced Pavela into action shortly before halftime when the Inter goalkeeper dealt with David Choinière’s attempt from a difficult angle.

Inter then appeared to have found a second goal shortly after the restart when Altobelli put the ball into the net, but the play was called back after the forward was penalized for contact with Milli.

That moment proved significant as Supra remained within one goal and gradually began to take control of the match.

Pavela keeps Inter Toronto alive as Supra responds

The visitors increased the pressure as the second half developed.

Pavela denied Choinière from close range following a corner in the 57th minute, but Supra finally found a way through four minutes later.

Raheem Edwards Abzi helped create the move before Choinière received the ball around the penalty spot and laid it into the path of Kwemi. The forward produced a composed finish beyond Pavela to make it 1-1.

Rather than slowing down after the equalizer, Supra continued to push for a winner.

Kwemi nearly scored his second in the 65th minute with an effort heading toward the top corner, only for Pavela to produce an impressive save and push it over the crossbar.

Inter’s defence was tested again four minutes later. Choinière met a cutback in a dangerous position, but Juan Córdova intervened to prevent the visitors from completing the comeback.

Pavela then denied Choinière again before later keeping out Sean Rea from outside the penalty area, emerging as one of Inter Toronto’s most important players during a second half largely controlled by Supra.

The visitors finished the match with 10 players after Abzi was sent off in stoppage time following a challenge on Pavela, but there was not enough time for Inter to capitalize on the numerical advantage.

Both teams remain outside the playoff picture

For Supra, the draw continued a season in which a young squad has been forced to learn while competing for results.

“Winning is something you learn, and learning how to win is the hardest thing in sport,” Supra head coach Nick Razzaghi said. “Being good and winning are two different things. Learning how to win takes time.”

Razzaghi pointed specifically to the youth within his team and the mental component involved in turning competitive performances into victories.

“When things aren’t going well, it’s often not the football that’s the problem; it’s the habit of winning, the habit of having that confidence that makes the difference,” he added. “Sport is a mental game.”

For Inter Toronto, the focus now shifts to another difficult assignment as the club continues trying to close the nine-point gap separating it from the playoff places.

Inter will travel to face Atlético Ottawa on August 28 at 7 p.m. ET.
