Bo Bichette begins new chapter with Mets after agreeing to three-year deal

Bo Bichette’s time in Toronto is over as the star infielder signs a three-year, $126 million deal with the Mets. The move closes a defining chapter for the Blue Jays and begins a new era in New York.

Bo Bichette

Bo Bichette’s long run in Toronto has come to an end. The All-Star infielder has agreed to a three-year, 126 million dollar contract with the New York Mets, marking one of the most significant moves of the offseason and closing a defining chapter in recent Blue Jays history.

The deal includes opt-out clauses after the first and second seasons, along with a five million dollar opt-out bonus and a full no-trade clause, giving Bichette both financial security and long-term flexibility. After spending nearly his entire career at shortstop, he is expected to transition to third base with his new club.

Why New York moved fast

Bichette’s market developed quickly. Several teams expressed strong interest, including Philadelphia, which reportedly met his asking price on a longer-term deal earlier in the week. The Mets ultimately won out by offering a shorter contract at a higher annual value, a structure that appealed to the 27-year-old as he enters his prime.

For New York, the move adds an elite bat to the infield and signals continued aggression as the club reshapes its roster with an eye toward immediate contention.

A standout 2025 season

Bichette heads to New York after one of the strongest campaigns of his career. In 2025, he hit .311 with 18 home runs, 94 RBIs and a .357 on-base percentage before a left knee sprain sidelined him in early September. He returned in time for the postseason and played a key role during the World Series run, batting .348 and delivering a pivotal three-run homer in Game 7 that briefly put Toronto on the brink of a storybook ending.

Even during that playoff run, Bichette spoke openly about his desire to remain with the Blue Jays, a sentiment that resonated deeply with fans. Ultimately, however, free agency carried him elsewhere.

The end of a defining era in Toronto

Drafted by the Blue Jays in the second round in 2016, Bichette debuted in 2019 and quickly became one of the faces of the franchise. Alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr., he anchored a core that defined the team’s identity for much of the past decade.

Toronto reached the playoffs three times during that stretch, and while postseason success was elusive until the recent breakthrough, Bichette remained a constant presence at the top of the lineup and a fixture at shortstop. Outside of an injury-heavy 2024 season, his durability and consistency were hallmarks of his time with the club.

Across 749 games in a Blue Jays uniform, Bichette posted a .294 career average with 111 home runs and 437 RBIs, cementing himself as one of the most productive hitters of his generation.

What comes next

For the Mets, Bichette represents both a short-term boost and a long-term bet on continued elite production. For Toronto, his departure marks a turning point, closing the book on a core that shaped an era while opening the door to a new phase of roster construction.

As Bichette prepares for a new role and a new city, his legacy in Toronto remains secure, defined by consistency, growth and a postseason moment that will not soon be forgotten.
