Inter Toronto FC has added one of Mexican football’s most experienced figures to its sporting structure, appointing José Guadalupe Cruz as Assistant First Team Coach & Director of Sporting Development.
The Canadian Premier League club announced the appointment Thursday, with Cruz joining head coach Mauro Eustáquio’s staff while also taking on responsibilities connected to player development across the organization.
Known in Mexico as “El Profe” Cruz, the former player and manager arrives in Toronto with nearly four decades of experience in professional football and a résumé that includes Liga MX and Concacaf titles.
Cruz takes on dual role at Inter Toronto
Cruz’s position will extend beyond his work with the First Team.
Alongside his responsibilities as an assistant coach, he will contribute to Inter Toronto’s sporting philosophy and development structure, with an emphasis on strengthening the pathway connecting the club’s Academy, Pathway and professional team.
The appointment gives Inter Toronto an experienced voice within a system that aims to provide young players with opportunities to progress through different levels of the organization.
“I’m very grateful to Inter Toronto for the opportunity to join this sporting project,” Cruz said. “I’ve been impressed by the talent and potential within the club, particularly in the Academy.”
“The objectives are clear and ambitious, and I’m excited to bring my experience, commitment and passion to help strengthen the First Team and continue developing the club’s young talent.”

A championship résumé in Mexican football
Cruz arrives in Canada after building an extensive career in Mexico both on the field and from the technical area.
As a coach, he has been in charge of several Liga MX clubs, including Atlante, Monterrey, Morelia, Puebla, Atlas and Dorados de Sinaloa.
His most successful period came with Atlante.
Cruz guided the club to the Apertura 2007 Liga MX championship and was recognized as Liga MX Head Coach of the Year during the same season. He later led Atlante to continental success by winning the 2008-09 Concacaf Champions League.
His coaching résumé also includes the Copa MX Clausura 2015 title with Puebla.
Before moving into coaching, Cruz enjoyed his own professional playing career and was a Mexican league champion with Atlante.
That combination of experience at the domestic and continental levels now becomes part of Inter Toronto’s sporting department as the club continues developing its internal structure.
Inter Toronto strengthens connection between First Team and Academy
Cruz’s arrival also reflects the broader scope of his new position.
Rather than focusing exclusively on the First Team, the Director of Sporting Development component of his role will allow him to work within the club’s wider player development model.
His experience will be used to support the connection between Inter Toronto’s Academy, Pathway and First Team, creating greater continuity between the environments in which the club’s younger players develop and the professional level they are ultimately attempting to reach.
For Cruz, that aspect of the project was among his early impressions of the organization, specifically highlighting the potential he has seen within the Academy.
His addition comes as Inter Toronto continues to build a structure designed to develop players internally while providing a route toward first-team football.
On the professional side, Cruz will work directly alongside Eustáquio and the rest of the coaching staff, adding his experience from almost four decades in Mexican football to the club’s day-to-day environment.
The move also brings a Liga MX and Concacaf champion into the Canadian Premier League, beginning a new chapter in Cruz’s career after years spent across different levels of the Mexican game.
For Inter Toronto, his arrival strengthens both sides of its sporting operation: the immediate work surrounding the First Team and the longer-term development of players progressing through the club.
