Canada is heading back to the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The Canadian men’s U-20 national team secured its place at the 2027 tournament after defeating Jamaica 3-1 in extra time on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship at Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla, Mexico.
Liam Mackenzie scored twice, including the goal that restored Canada’s lead in extra time, before Max Vogele sealed the result with a late volley. The victory sends Canada into the Concacaf U-20 Championship semifinals and, more importantly, guarantees the program one of the region’s places at the 2027 FIFA Men’s U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
Mackenzie breaks through for Canada
After a scoreless opening half, Canada finally found its breakthrough in the 57th minute.
Mackenzie created the opportunity himself, working his way past multiple Jamaican defenders before finding enough space near the edge of the penalty area. He finished the move with his left foot to give Canada a 1-0 advantage.
For most of the second half, that goal appeared as though it might be enough to send Canada through.
Jamaica, however, found a way back into the match with only minutes remaining.
The Reggae Boyz were awarded a penalty in the 87th minute and captain Jahmarie Nolan converted from the spot, tying the game at 1-1 and forcing the quarterfinal into extra time.
Canada responds immediately in extra time
Instead of allowing the late equalizer to shift the momentum, Canada quickly regained control.
Just four minutes into extra time, the Canadians were awarded a penalty of their own. Mackenzie stepped up and converted in the 94th minute, completing his brace and putting Canada back in front at 2-1.
With its World Cup qualification hopes once again in its own hands, Canada protected the advantage through the remainder of the first extra-time period and into the second.
Vogele then removed any remaining doubt in the 116th minute.
The Canadian connected cleanly on a volley and sent his finish into the upper corner, giving Canada a two-goal cushion and putting the quarterfinal beyond Jamaica’s reach.
Canada books its ticket to the 2027 U-20 World Cup
The 3-1 victory represents a significant step for Canada’s young generation.
By reaching the semifinals of the Concacaf U-20 Championship, Canada has officially qualified for the 2027 FIFA Men’s U-20 World Cup, which will be hosted by Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
Canada’s tournament in Mexico is not finished.
The Canadians now move into the semifinals of the Concacaf competition, where they will face the winner of the quarterfinal between Mexico and Panama.
After surviving Jamaica’s late equalizer and responding with two goals in extra time, Canada will now have an opportunity to continue its run in Puebla with its World Cup ticket already secured.
