Canada’s run at the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship came to an end one step short of the final, as Mexico rallied from an early deficit to earn a 2-1 semifinal victory on Friday night at Estadio Banorte in Mexico City.

Owen Graham-Roache gave Canada a dream start with a spectacular sixth-minute volley, but Mexico responded after halftime through Cristóbal Alfaro before Hugo Camberos converted a late penalty to complete the comeback.

The defeat ends Canada’s bid for the regional title, although the team had already secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Men’s U-20 World Cup by defeating Jamaica in the quarterfinals.

Graham-Roache gives Canada the perfect start

Canada wasted little time making its presence felt against the tournament hosts.

Only six minutes into the match, Graham-Roache connected on an impressive volley from outside the penalty area to put Canada ahead 1-0 and immediately place pressure on a Mexican side playing in front of its home crowd.

The early goal gave Canada something to protect and forced Mexico to chase the match from the opening stages.

For the remainder of the first half, the Canadians managed to preserve their advantage and entered the break with a place in the Concacaf U-20 Championship final within reach.

Mexico responds after halftime

The dynamic changed quickly after the restart.

Mexico found the equalizer in the 49th minute when Alfaro produced a well-placed finish to make it 1-1, erasing Canada’s early advantage and setting up a much more difficult second half.

Canada’s task became even harder in the 67th minute when Liam Mackenzie received his second yellow card and was sent off, leaving the Canadians to finish the match with 10 players.

Mackenzie had been one of Canada’s key figures in the knockout stage after scoring twice in the quarterfinal victory over Jamaica, but his dismissal gave Mexico a significant numerical advantage with more than 20 minutes remaining.

Camberos completes Mexico’s comeback

Mexico eventually made the extra player count.

In the 78th minute, Camberos stepped up from the penalty spot and converted what proved to be the winning goal. It was his fifth goal in as many matches at the tournament, moving him into the lead in the Concacaf U-20 Championship Golden Boot race.

Canada was unable to find a response in the closing stages, and Mexico held on to secure its place in Sunday’s final against the United States.

The victory also earned Mexico qualification for the men’s football tournament at the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Canada leaves tournament with World Cup ticket secured

While the semifinal defeat brings Canada’s Concacaf campaign to a close, the tournament still delivered an important achievement for the program.

Canada booked its place at the 2027 FIFA Men’s U-20 World Cup following a 3-1 extra-time victory over Jamaica in the quarterfinals, guaranteeing the young Canadians another opportunity to compete on the international stage next year.

The semifinal in Mexico City ultimately proved a step too far, with an early lead overturned after halftime and Mackenzie’s red card changing the complexion of the match.

Still, Canada departs the tournament having accomplished one of its primary objectives: securing a return to the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
