Canada moves within one win of 2027 FIBA World Cup berth

Canada is on the verge of qualifying for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup after improving to 8-0 in the Americas Qualifiers with a 97-92 comeback victory over Argentina in Quebec City.

The Canadian men erased a 17-point deficit and remained the only undefeated team in the Americas qualifying tournament, strengthening their grip on first place in Group F.

Canada has not officially clinched, but the path is now simple: one more victory in the next qualifying window would secure its place at the World Cup.

Dort, Alexander-Walker lead comeback

Canada played without several of its biggest NBA names, including Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, RJ Barrett and Dillon Brooks, but still found enough offence to get past Argentina.

Luguentz Dort and Nickeil Alexander-Walker combined for 51 points on 16-for-30 shooting from the field, providing the bulk of Canada’s scoring in the comeback.

Marcus Carr added 14 points while starting at point guard, and Mfiondu Kabengele finished with a double-double as Canada once again leaned on the depth that has carried the program through qualifying.

That depth has been especially important given the length of the qualification process and the changing availability of players from one window to the next.

Canada remains perfect through eight games

The Americas Qualifiers began in November 2025 with 16 teams. After the first six games, four teams were eliminated, leaving the remaining teams to complete another six-game phase that will determine the seven representatives from the region at the 2027 World Cup.

Through eight games, Canada is 8-0 and leads Group F by two points over Uruguay and Argentina. The Canadians could have clinched on Monday had the Bahamas lost to Panama, but the Bahamas won and kept the race mathematically open.

Canada would now need a highly unlikely combination of results, including losses in all four of its remaining games, to miss qualification.

The next opportunity comes in November. Canada will face Uruguay on Nov. 26 before meeting Argentina again on Nov. 29. A victory in either game would guarantee qualification.

World Cup also carries Olympic implications

The 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup will be played from Aug. 27 to Sept. 12 in Qatar. Canada will enter the tournament, if it qualifies as expected, as the defending bronze medallist after defeating the United States in the third-place game at the 2023 World Cup.

The competition will also play a role in qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The top two teams from the Americas, excluding host nation United States, will earn Olympic berths.

For Canada, however, the immediate objective is much closer. After eight consecutive wins, only one more is needed to formally complete qualification.
