Toronto FC Signs Josh Sargent: Impact on Team Strategy
New Toronto FC signing Josh Sargent says he is excited to begin a new chapter in MLS after leaving Norwich City.
The 26-year-old American forward was introduced by the club on Wednesday after signing as a designated player through the 2030-31 Major League Soccer season. His arrival brings him back to North America following a five-year stint with English side Norwich City.
Speaking during his introductory press conference, Sargent described the transfer process as emotional but ultimately rewarding.
“I’m very excited to get started and very happy to be part of the TFC family now,” Sargent said. “There were a lot of twists and turns and it was a long process with a lot of emotions, but the biggest feeling right now is relief that I’m finally here.”
Productive spell in England
Sargent spent the last five seasons with Norwich City in England’s Championship, where he scored 56 goals in 157 appearances across all competitions. He registered eight goals during the current campaign before his departure from the club.
His time with Norwich ended on difficult terms after he was dropped from the first team following his absence from an FA Cup match earlier in the season.
Despite the circumstances surrounding his exit, Sargent said the opportunity to join Toronto presented an appealing next step in his career.
Fraser praises new striker
Toronto FC head coach Robin Fraser said the club was pleased to secure a player of Sargent’s experience and quality.
“A lot of this came down to Josh’s commitment to wanting to be here,” Fraser said. “We feel very fortunate and very excited to have someone of his calibre join the group. He fits the profile of the type of forward we were looking for.”
Fraser added that the coaching staff believes Sargent’s versatility and work rate will strengthen Toronto’s attack as the team enters its 20th season in Major League Soccer.
International experience and new beginning
Originally from Missouri, Sargent has also been a regular member of the United States men’s national team since making his debut in 2018. He has scored five goals in 29 appearances and represented the United States at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Off the field, Sargent said personal considerations also played a role in his decision to return to North America.
“We’ve started a family, and the idea of being closer to home became more appealing,” he said. “When Toronto reached out and explained the project and what they’re building here, it made the decision really exciting for me.”
Sargent joins a Toronto FC side undergoing a roster rebuild ahead of its milestone 20th MLS season after the departures of former designated players Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi last year.
The club hopes the addition of Sargent will provide a key attacking presence as it looks to return to playoff contention.
