Canada took a major step toward the knockout stage of the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship after defeating Panama 3-0 in Puebla, earning its second consecutive victory and moving to the top of Group C.
The Canadian side capitalized on its opportunities and controlled the match after Panama was reduced to 10 men before halftime, with Emrick Fotsing delivering the standout performance by scoring twice.
Canada strikes first after early Panama pressure
The opening minutes featured chances for both teams at Estadio Universitario BUAP, with Panama nearly breaking the deadlock when Raheen Cuello got behind Canada’s defense but lifted his finish over the crossbar in a one-on-one situation.
Canada responded by making the most of a set-piece opportunity. Emrick Fotsing rose highest inside the penalty area to head home from a corner kick, giving the Canadians the lead after weathering Panama’s early pressure.
The advantage doubled shortly afterward when Canada converted a penalty through Mackenzie, putting Panama in an increasingly difficult position before halftime.

Red card changes the match
Panama attempted to find a way back into the contest before the break, but its task became significantly more complicated in first-half stoppage time.
Oliver Campos was shown a straight red card following a heavy challenge, forcing the Panamanians to play the entire second half with 10 men.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Panama opened the second half aggressively. Klissman De Gracia came close after being set up by Cuello, but his effort drifted wide of the target.
Fotsing seals Canada’s victory
Canada remained composed throughout the second half, controlling possession and limiting Panama’s attacking opportunities while looking to exploit the extra space left by its opponent.
As Panama pushed forward in search of a goal, Canada continued to threaten in transition and created several dangerous situations before putting the game beyond doubt in the closing stages.
Fotsing completed his brace with Canada’s third goal of the afternoon, sealing a convincing 3-0 victory that leaves the Canadians in a strong position in Group C.
Meanwhile, Panama now faces increased pressure heading into its remaining group-stage matches, needing positive results to keep its hopes of reaching the knockout rounds alive.
