A late comeback attempt came up just short for the Toronto Blue Jays in an 8-7 spring training loss to the New York Yankees on Tuesday.
Paul Goldschmidt led the way for New York, homering and driving in four runs as the Yankees improved to 3-2 in Grapefruit League play.
Goldschmidt gave New York a 4-1 lead in the third inning with a two-run homer off Tyler Rogers. He added a two-run double in the fifth to extend the advantage to 6-1.
Toronto starter Grant Rogers allowed two runs on four hits over two innings and was charged with the loss. Yankees starter Will Warren picked up the win after allowing one run on four hits while striking out four over 2 2/3 innings.
Trailing 7-1 in the sixth, the Blue Jays mounted a four-run rally. Carlos Mendoza opened the inning with an RBI single. Charles McAdoo followed with a two-run double and later scored on a throwing error to cut the deficit to 7-5.
New York regained breathing room in the eighth when Jace Avina hit a solo home run to make it 8-5.
Toronto made one final push in the ninth. Jake Casey hit a two-run homer with none out to bring the Blue Jays within a run, but Yankees reliever Carson Coleman retired the next three batters to secure the save.
Toronto dropped to 1-3 in spring training and will travel to Lakeland, Fla., on Wednesday to face the Detroit Tigers.
