Toronto FC adds proven MLS leader Walker Zimmerman to anchor its defence
Toronto FC strengthened their defence by signing Walker Zimmerman, a two-time MLS Defender of the Year and U.S. international, bringing leadership and championship experience to the club.
Toronto FC has made a significant move to reinforce its back line, acquiring U.S. international defender Walker Zimmerman and securing one of Major League Soccer’s most decorated centre-backs through the 2027–28 MLS season. The deal is pending the completion of standard league requirements, including international clearance, work authorization and medicals.
A cornerstone addition for Toronto’s rebuild
Zimmerman arrives in Toronto with a reputation built on consistency, leadership and elite defensive production. At 32, the two-time MLS Defender of the Year brings a profile that extends beyond on-field performance, offering a commanding presence in the locker room and a proven track record in high-stakes matches.
Toronto FC’s front office targeted Zimmerman early in the offseason, viewing him as a foundational piece capable of elevating the club’s defensive identity while helping establish a winning culture.
Six seasons as Nashville’s defensive backbone
Zimmerman joins Toronto after six seasons with Nashville SC, where he became synonymous with the club’s rise as an expansion side. Across all competitions, he made 172 appearances, contributing 16 goals and seven assists while serving as the defensive leader from the moment Nashville entered the league.
His impact was immediate. In Nashville’s first-ever MLS match in 2020, Zimmerman scored the club’s inaugural goal, setting the tone for what would become one of the league’s most reliable defensive units. That influence culminated in 2025, when he captained the side to its first major trophy by winning the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Championship pedigree across MLS
Before Nashville, Zimmerman spent time with Los Angeles FC and FC Dallas, collecting silverware and individual honours along the way. With LAFC, he played a key role in the club’s 2019 Supporters’ Shield-winning campaign, earning MLS Best XI recognition and his first All-Star selection.
His professional career began in Dallas after being selected seventh overall in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. There, he helped the club capture both the Supporters’ Shield and U.S. Open Cup in 2016, further cementing his reputation as a defender who delivers results.
Since entering MLS, Zimmerman has recorded 26 goals in 307 appearances, an uncommon scoring output for a centre-back, while collecting four All-Star selections, five consecutive MLS Best XI honours and two Defender of the Year awards.
Experience on the international stage
Zimmerman’s résumé extends well beyond club football. He has earned 46 caps with the United States Men’s National Team, representing his country at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he started all group-stage matches and featured in the knockout rounds.
He has also captained the U.S. during World Cup qualifying and represented Team USA at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, adding another layer of experience in tournament environments that demand composure and leadership.
What Zimmerman brings to Toronto FC
For Toronto FC, Zimmerman’s arrival signals a clear intent to stabilize and strengthen the spine of the team. His aerial presence, organizational skills and familiarity with MLS attackers make him a natural fit to lead the defensive unit.
As the club looks to return to contention, Zimmerman steps into a central role, tasked with helping translate experience into results and guiding a new era at BMO Field.
