MLS: Toronto FC Bring Raheem Edwards Home After Claiming Him Off Waivers
Toronto FC has re-signed defender Raheem Edwards, who returns to BMO Field nearly a decade after joining the MLS. As a product of the club’s academy, Edwards played a vital role in the team’s historic 2017 treble. Now a seasoned veteran, his return aims to strengthen the team’s defensive unit and reinforce local identity.
Toronto FC is bringing a familiar face back to BMO Field. The club confirmed they have claimed defender Raheem Edwards off waivers from Red Bull New York, marking a homecoming for one of the GTA’s own. Nearly a decade after first breaking into Major League Soccer with the Reds, Edwards returns to the city where his professional journey began.
A product of Toronto’s pathway
Edwards was once one of the brightest success stories from the Toronto FC Academy system. In March 2017, he signed a first-team deal, becoming the 14th academy product in club history to earn that opportunity.
That same season turned into the most iconic year in franchise history.
As part of the 2017 squad, Edwards helped Toronto FC capture MLS Cup, the Supporters’ Shield and the Canadian Championship, completing the only domestic treble in league history. While not always a headline name, his versatility and energy played a role in a team that set the standard for success in Canada.
Before establishing himself in MLS, Edwards developed through Toronto FC II in 2015 and 2016. He made his senior debut in June 2016 during the Canadian Championship against Vancouver Whitecaps FC, a milestone that marked the beginning of a career built on persistence and adaptability.
Across his first stint with Toronto, Edwards recorded eight assists in 27 appearances in all competitions.
Experience across the league
Now 30 and entering his 10th MLS season, Edwards returns to Toronto as a seasoned veteran. Since leaving the Reds, he has worn several jerseys across the league, including CF Montréal, LA Galaxy, Los Angeles FC, Minnesota United and Chicago Fire. In 2025 with Red Bull New York, he made 29 appearances and contributed three assists across MLS, Leagues Cup and U.S. Open Cup play.
Over 178 MLS regular season matches, Edwards has registered eight goals and 30 assists, carving out a reputation as a dependable wide defender capable of contributing on both sides of the ball.
His international résumé includes five caps with the Canadian Men’s National Team, debuting in 2017 against Curaçao.
