Canada Soccer launches inaugural W Canadian Championship with pathway to FIFA Women’s Club World Cup

Canada’s domestic women’s soccer landscape is set to take another significant step forward.

Canada Soccer officially announced the launch of the inaugural W Canadian Championship, a new national knockout competition that will crown the country’s top women’s club while also providing a direct pathway to international competition. Beginning with the 2026-27 edition, the tournament winner will qualify for the 2027 Concacaf W Champions Cup, with the opportunity to reach the inaugural FIFA Women’s Club World Cup in 2028.

The competition marks another milestone in the rapid growth of the women’s professional game across Canada, bringing together clubs from the Northern Super League (NSL) and Premier Soccer Leagues Canada (PSLC) for the first time in a national championship.

Eight clubs will compete in the first edition

The inaugural tournament will feature eight teams, including all six Northern Super League clubs alongside two representatives from Premier Soccer Leagues Canada.

The participating clubs are:

• AFC Toronto (NSL)
• Calgary Wild FC (NSL)
• Halifax Tides FC (NSL)
• Montréal Roses FC (NSL)
• Ottawa Rapid FC (NSL)
• Vancouver Rise FC (NSL)
• CS Mont-Royal Outremont (LS Pro QC)
• Simcoe County Rovers FC (Ontario Premier League)

The competition will follow a single-elimination format across three rounds: quarterfinals, semifinals and the championship match.

Quarterfinal schedule confirmed

The tournament opens on August 3 with an all-NSL matchup between Halifax Tides FC and Ottawa Rapid FC, a match that will also count toward the league standings and will stream on the NSL YouTube channel and TSN+.

The remaining quarterfinals are:

• August 5: Calgary Wild FC vs. CS Mont-Royal Outremont
• August 12: Montréal Roses FC vs. Simcoe County Rovers FC
• October 4: AFC Toronto vs. Vancouver Rise FC (TSN)

Following the completion of the quarterfinals, the tournament will pause before returning in early 2027 for the semifinals and final. Canada Soccer will conduct a new draw next year to determine both the semifinal matchups and hosting rights.

A direct route to continental and global competition

Beyond the national title, the stakes extend well beyond Canada’s borders.

Starting in 2027, the W Canadian Championship champion will become Canada’s representative in the revamped Concacaf W Champions Cup, which will transition to an 11-team knockout format.

The winner of that continental tournament will then secure a place in the inaugural FIFA Women’s Club World Cup, scheduled for 2028.

Canada Soccer Chief of Soccer Operations and Associate General Secretary Mathieu Chamberland described the competition as an important milestone for the sport.

“We are proud to launch the inaugural W Canadian Championship, a significant milestone in the continued growth of women’s professional soccer in Canada,” Chamberland said. “This new competition strengthens the domestic pathway for clubs and players, providing the opportunity to compete for a national title and qualify for the Concacaf W Champions Cup and, ultimately, the FIFA Women’s Club World Cup.”

Northern Super League Vice President of Sport José Maria de Costa believes the tournament creates a meaningful competitive pathway for clubs across the country.

“The W Canadian Championship creates a clear pathway from domestic competition to the highest levels of club football,” de Costa said. “Every match carries real significance.”

Premier Soccer Leagues Canada Vice President Dino Rossi added that the tournament will also shine a spotlight on clubs competing outside the professional ranks.

“The W Canadian Championship gives our clubs and players the opportunity to compete on a national stage while showcasing the quality and ambition that exists throughout Premier Soccer Leagues Canada,” Rossi said.
