Toronto FC vs Chicago Fire finished with another frustrating road defeat for the Reds on Saturday night, as Toronto dropped a 2-1 result at Soldier Field in its final MLS match before the FIFA World Cup 2026 break.

The defeat capped off a difficult opening stretch of the season for Toronto FC, which showed positive attacking moments throughout the night but once again struggled to manage key defensive sequences against one of the Eastern Conference’s top teams. Chicago, meanwhile, continued its strong form near the top of the standings with another important home victory.

Robin Fraser made two changes to his starting lineup following last weekend’s defeat against Charlotte FC, bringing Nickson Gomis and Josh Sargent into the side. The night also carried extra significance for Alonso Coello, who reached 100 appearances for Toronto FC across all competitions.

Toronto FC vs Chicago Fire starts with attacking intensity

Toronto began the match aggressively and nearly opened the scoring within the first five minutes. Malik Henry delivered a dangerous low cross into the area that found Josh Sargent, but Chicago goalkeeper Chris Brady reacted quickly to stop the forward’s sliding effort.

The early pressure gave Toronto confidence, but Chicago found the breakthrough midway through the first half through a quick transition move. Hugo Cuypers carried the ball down the left side before combining with Maren Haile-Selassie, whose one-touch pass released Robin Lod into space. The Finnish midfielder calmly finished past Luka Gavran to give the Fire a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.

Toronto responded well after conceding and continued to create dangerous attacking moments. Dániel Sallói held possession in midfield before finding Coello, whose perfectly weighted pass split Chicago’s defenders and sent Sargent through on goal.

The striker made no mistake with his first touch, powering a finish beyond Brady to equalize in the 34th minute. The goal marked Sargent’s third of the MLS season and highlighted the growing chemistry developing within Toronto’s attack during recent weeks.

Just minutes later, Sargent nearly scored again after beating Jack Elliott near the top of the penalty area, but his attempt sailed over the crossbar. Derrick Etienne Jr. also forced another strong save from Brady shortly before halftime as Toronto pushed for a second goal before the break.

Toronto FC vs Chicago Fire was one of the Reds’ most competitive road performances in recent weeks.

Chicago capitalizes after halftime adjustments

Toronto made a defensive adjustment at halftime, introducing Zane Monlouis for Gomis as Fraser looked to maintain stability at the back.

For much of the second half, the match remained balanced until Chicago regained control through a second-phase set piece in the 65th minute. Philip Zinckernagel’s initial cross was cleared away, but the Danish winger recovered possession and immediately delivered another dangerous ball into the box. Andrew Gutman rose highest to head home the eventual winning goal.

The Reds attempted to respond with multiple substitutions as Emilio Aristizábal, Theo Corbeanu, Raheem Edwards and Jules-Anthony Vilsaint all entered the match during the final half hour.

Corbeanu’s appearance marked his first MLS action of the season following his recovery from a knee injury suffered earlier in the year. Gavran also produced an important save in the 84th minute to deny Puso Dithejane and keep Toronto within one goal entering stoppage time.

Toronto nearly found a dramatic equalizer late after Chicago goalkeeper Chris Brady was penalized for exceeding the league’s eight-second possession rule, awarding Toronto a final corner kick opportunity deep into added time.

Coello’s delivery into the area created chaos inside the box as Gavran joined the attack, but Toronto could not generate a final clean touch before Chicago cleared the danger and secured all three points.

The Toronto FC vs Chicago Fire matchup also marked Alonso Coello’s 100th appearance for the club.

Despite the result, Toronto again showed flashes of attacking improvement before entering the extended FIFA World Cup break. Sallói continued his productive start with the Reds by recording his fifth assist of the campaign, while Coello’s milestone appearance reflected his growing importance within Fraser’s midfield structure.

Toronto FC will now pause MLS action during the FIFA World Cup 2026 before returning in July for a rivalry clash against CF Montréal at Stade Saputo.
