Mexico opened its 2026 World Baseball Classic campaign with an 8-2 win over Great Britain on Friday at Daikin Park, in a game that drew a large and energetic crowd in Houston.

An announced attendance of 29,724 filled the stadium for the midday matchup, with many fans waving Mexican flags and wearing national team jerseys, creating an atmosphere that resembled a home game for the Mexican squad.

The victory gives Mexico an early advantage in Group B play as the team prepares for a highly anticipated matchup against the United States on Monday.


Aranda’s late homer breaks the game open

The turning point came in the eighth inning when Jonathan Aranda launched a three-run home run that put Mexico firmly in control.

The blast triggered loud celebrations throughout the stadium as teammates Jarren Duran and Randy Arozarena greeted Aranda at home plate with a sombrero during the post-homer celebration.

Mexico added four more runs in the ninth inning to secure the win and underline its status as one of the favorites to advance from Group B.


Game featured several key moments

Earlier in the game, Nacho Alvarez Jr. energized the crowd with a home run to center field, while Great Britain’s Trayce Thompson delivered a highlight defensive play by robbing Aranda of a potential home run with a leaping catch at the right-field wall.

Great Britain briefly pulled even in the sixth inning when Henry Ford hit a game-tying home run into the Crawford Boxes.

Despite those moments, Mexico regained momentum late and pulled away in the final innings.


Anticipation builds for Mexico–USA matchup

Friday’s game served as an early statement for Mexico as the tournament continues in Houston.

The atmosphere at Daikin Park is expected to intensify even further on Monday when Mexico faces the United States in one of the most anticipated group-stage games of the tournament.

Team USA was scheduled to open its World Baseball Classic campaign against Brazil later on Friday.
