Thomas Muller scored a penalty and a header in the first half as the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated Toronto FC 3-0 in Major League Soccer action at BC Place on Saturday, keeping their unbeaten run intact across all competitions to open the season.

Brian White also scored for Vancouver, netting his 80th goal in Whitecaps colours to give the home side a commanding lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

Muller Opens the Scoring From the Spot

Toronto’s aggression in the midfield set the tone for how the afternoon would unfold. In the 24th minute, centre back Walker Zimmerman tripped midfielder Aziel Jackson inside the penalty area, and referee Fotis Bazakos awarded the spot kick.

Muller stepped up and converted, sending a right-footed shot into the bottom-left corner past goalkeeper Luka Gavran for his first MLS goal of the season. The 36-year-old has now scored 11 goals for Vancouver across all competitions since joining the club in mid-August.

He doubled the lead in the 37th minute, directing a corner kick into the net from the top of the six-yard box to make it 2-0.

White Reaches Club Milestone Before the Break

Vancouver added a third in first-half stoppage time off another set piece. Sebastian Berhalter’s corner bounced off a Toronto defender, and White reacted quickly, finishing off balance to put the ball past Gavran. The goal was White’s first of the 2026 season and the 80th of his Whitecaps career, moving him into sole possession of second place on the club’s all-time scoring list behind Domenic Mobilio, who scored 170.

Takaoka Earns Fourth Clean Sheet of 2026

The Whitecaps held 58.1 per cent possession and outshot TFC 14-4, with a 5-3 advantage in shots on target. Goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka made three saves, including a diving stop on a Jose Cifuentes effort in the 75th minute to preserve the shutout — his fourth across all competitions this season. Vancouver has not allowed a goal in any game so far in 2026.

Toronto’s best opportunity came in the 55th minute when Djordje Mihailovic put a shot past Takaoka, but the goal was called back for offside. The visitors did not register their first shot of the game until the 67th minute.

New designated player Josh Sargent, who signed with TFC earlier in the week following his departure from Norwich City, was not in the lineup.

Vancouver improved to 2-0-0 in MLS play with the result.
