Toronto Raptors overpower Orlando Magic as Barnes and Barrett combine for 53 points
The Toronto Raptors rebounded from a previous loss to defeat the Orlando Magic 129-99, showcasing strong performances from Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett. Despite Kawhi Leonard’s absence, the Raptors improved their offensive dynamics, notably their three-point shooting. Orlando, missing key players, struggled to keep pace and fell to 1-3.

The Toronto Raptors turned their first setback of the season into a convincing response Wednesday night, defeating the Orlando Magic 129-99 at Scotiabank Arena behind 28 points from Scottie Barnes and 25 from RJ Barrett.
Playing without Kawhi Leonard for the second consecutive game, Toronto improved to 3-1 with a performance built around aggressive drives, improved three-point shooting and contributions from its bench. The result came three days after a 23-point loss to Minnesota, when the Raptors struggled to generate offence.
Orlando, also missing key players, dropped to 1-3 as Toronto pulled away before halftime and maintained control throughout the second half.
Barrett sets the tone before Barnes takes over
Barrett established Toronto’s offensive rhythm early, scoring 12 points in the opening quarter to help the Raptors build a 32-25 advantage. His perimeter shooting was particularly encouraging after a difficult start to the season, as he connected on his first three attempts from beyond the arc.
The Mississauga native added nine points in the second quarter, reaching 21 by halftime. He finished with nine rebounds and six assists, complementing his scoring with contributions across the floor.
Barnes, meanwhile, delivered the kind of attacking performance Toronto had lacked against the Timberwolves. After going scoreless in that defeat, he repeatedly challenged Orlando’s defence around the basket and found opportunities to finish through traffic.
His most memorable play came with 1:11 remaining in the first half, when he completed a 360-degree dunk that capped a 12-3 Raptors run and extended their lead to 16 points.
Toronto closed the second quarter on a 27-11 run, creating separation that Orlando never managed to erase.
Barnes then took command after the break, scoring 16 points in the third quarter. He finished with six rebounds, four assists and three steals, providing the two-way production that helped Toronto build its advantage.
Raptors find answers beyond their starting lineup
Leonard’s absence had exposed Toronto’s offensive limitations against Minnesota, but Wednesday offered a different picture.
Ja’Kobe Walter made another start in place of the injured forward and contributed 14 points and five rebounds. Jamal Shead was equally valuable off the bench, finishing with 13 points and seven assists while helping Toronto accelerate its offence during the decisive second-quarter stretch.
The Raptors also found greater success from long range. After entering the game with one of the NBA’s least productive three-point attacks, they converted 15 of 35 attempts against Orlando, a significant improvement from their opening three games.
That efficiency gave Toronto another scoring option alongside Barnes’ work near the basket and Barrett’s early production.
Leonard remains sidelined with swelling in his left knee and is scheduled to be re-evaluated after at least one week of treatment and rehabilitation. The veteran forward, who returned to Toronto during the offseason, was not on the bench Wednesday.
For head coach Darko Rajakovic, the victory demonstrated that the Raptors can distribute offensive responsibilities across several players rather than relying on a single replacement for Leonard.
Orlando struggles to keep pace without Banchero
The Magic entered the contest without Paolo Banchero, who is dealing with a sprained right ankle, and defensive standout Jalen Suggs.
Tristan da Silva led Orlando with 20 points off the bench, while Franz Wagner contributed 15 points, five assists and four rebounds.
Wagner scored 11 of his points before halftime, but Toronto’s defensive adjustments restricted him to four in the second half. He also committed seven turnovers as the Magic struggled to sustain their offence.
Orlando converted 10 of its 35 three-point attempts and could not match Toronto’s production once the home team established its double-digit advantage.
The 30-point victory gives the Raptors momentum ahead of another meeting with the Magic on Friday at Scotiabank Arena, this time in NBA Cup play.
Toronto will then begin a two-game trip to Los Angeles, facing the Lakers on Sunday before meeting the Clippers on Monday.
With Leonard unavailable, Wednesday’s performance offered an encouraging early indication of the Raptors’ depth. Barnes and Barrett supplied the scoring, but the contributions around them were just as important in turning a difficult previous outing into Toronto’s third victory of the season.
