Canada to host decisive Nations League quarterfinal leg in Toronto

Canada will return to BMO Field in November with two major objectives at stake: a place in the Concacaf Nations League Finals and direct qualification for the 2027 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Canada Soccer confirmed that the men’s national team will host the second leg of its 2026-27 Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal on Monday, Nov. 16 in Toronto.

Canada’s opponent has yet to be determined. The first leg will be played away from home, with both the matchup and venue to be confirmed following the conclusion of the Nations League group stage in October.

Canada earns direct place in quarterfinals

CANMNT will not have to navigate the group stage after earning a bye into the final eight as one of Concacaf’s four top-ranked nations.

Canada joins Mexico, the United States and Panama in advancing directly to the quarterfinals after finishing third in the 2024-25 Nations League.

The November matchup will be played over two legs, with aggregate goals determining which team advances.

That makes the Nov. 16 match at BMO Field potentially decisive. Canada will arrive in Toronto knowing exactly what result it needs following the opening leg on the road.

There will also be more than a Nations League semifinal berth on the line.

All four quarterfinal winners will qualify directly for the 2027 Concacaf Gold Cup and advance to the Nations League Finals, scheduled for March 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

The four teams eliminated in the quarterfinals will instead have to go through the Gold Cup preliminary round.

BMO Field again hosts Nations League knockout match

Toronto was also the site of Canada’s most recent successful Nations League quarterfinal.

In November 2024, CANMNT defeated Suriname 3-0 at BMO Field to complete a 4-0 aggregate victory and book its place in the 2024-25 Nations League Finals.

Canada went on to finish third in that edition of the competition.

The national team has reached the Nations League Finals in two of the past three editions. Its best finish came in 2022-23, when Canada reached the championship match before finishing runner-up.

The November quarterfinal will provide an opportunity to qualify for the Finals for the third time in four editions.

Nations League to close historic year for CANMNT

The two-leg series will also conclude Canada’s competitive calendar in a landmark year for the men’s program.

Canada reached the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time this summer, advancing to the Round of 16 before its tournament ended against Morocco.

Before turning its attention to the Nations League, Jesse Marsch’s team will play three matches during the September-October international window. Canada hosts Chile at BMO Field on Sept. 26 and Peru at Stade Saputo on Oct. 3 before travelling to Minnesota to face the United States on Oct. 6.

The identity of Canada’s Nations League quarterfinal opponent will become clear after those matches, once the October group stage is complete.

Regardless of the matchup, the path is already established: Canada will begin the quarterfinal away from home before returning to Toronto on Nov. 16 with a place in Los Angeles and direct entry into the 2027 Gold Cup on the line.

Tickets for Canada’s home leg at BMO Field will go on sale to the general public on Thursday, Oct. 1.
