Barenaked Ladies bring Canadian touch to Bills’ new stadium
The Buffalo Bills celebrated the opening of their new Highmark Stadium with a 41-31 victory over the Detroit Lions. Toronto band Barenaked Ladies performed “O Canada” before the game, highlighting the franchise’s Canadian ties. The event featured fireworks, light shows, and concluded with a halftime performance by OneRepublic.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills opened their new Highmark Stadium with a win, but the first regular-season night at the venue also included a familiar Canadian presence before kickoff.
Toronto band Barenaked Ladies performed “O Canada” in front of a packed crowd Thursday before Buffalo defeated the Detroit Lions 41-31, adding a cross-border element to the opening ceremonies at the Bills’ new $2.1-billion home.
Both national anthems were part of the pregame program, with Canadian and U.S. flags displayed on the field. Barenaked Ladies received a loud reception before their performance, followed by actress and singer Auli’i Cravalho singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
The Canadian anthem was a fitting addition for a franchise whose home sits close to the border and draws support from fans travelling from Canada.
A new era begins at Highmark Stadium
The ceremony extended well beyond the anthems. Fireworks were used before the game and again during the formal opening, while fans displayed three large banners featuring Bills and Mafia branding along with a logo recognizing the stadium’s inaugural season.
The crowd also participated in a light show through illuminated bracelets before Buffalo’s offensive starters were introduced. Josh Allen received one of the night’s biggest reactions, accompanied by chants of “M-V-P.”
Once the game started, the quarterback quickly gave the crowd another reason to celebrate.
Buffalo opened with a 10-play, 85-yard possession that ended with Allen scoring on a one-yard run approximately six minutes into the game. The Bills eventually finished their first regular-season game in the building with a 41-31 victory over Detroit.
OneRepublic was scheduled as the halftime performer, adding another musical act to a night built around the stadium’s regular-season debut.
Bills unveil new field after preseason concerns
The game also provided the first regular-season test for a field that had received attention during the preseason.
Buffalo replaced the entire grass surface following its Aug. 27 preseason finale against Pittsburgh after the original turf showed wear during two preseason games and two practices.
Players who practiced at the stadium Tuesday said the replacement surface felt firmer and contained more sand. During warmups Thursday, sand could be seen coming up as players made cuts, while an official had to press down a section of grass during Buffalo’s opening possession.
The field also received its full game-day appearance for the occasion. “BILLS” was painted in large white letters over red grass in both end zones, while the team’s charging buffalo logo was placed at midfield.
Canadian fans part of Buffalo’s new home
The new Highmark Stadium holds just over 60,000 spectators, roughly 12,000 fewer than the Bills’ former stadium, which is being demolished across the street.
Its design places the seating more vertically around the field, while a canopy is intended to help direct crowd noise toward the playing surface.
The atmosphere began building well before Thursday. Fans arrived in the area days in advance, with RVs filling a nearby private lot by Tuesday and long lines forming before the stadium gates opened despite light rain.
For Canadian Bills supporters, the opening ceremonies also provided recognition of the franchise’s cross-border connection. With Barenaked Ladies leading “O Canada” before the first regular-season game and Buffalo following with a 41-31 victory, the new stadium’s first official NFL night combined the start of a new era with a distinctly Canadian moment.
