The FIFA World Cup semifinal between France and Spain already promises world-class soccer, but one matchup stands above the rest.

Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal will once again share the same pitch, adding another chapter to one of soccer’s newest rivalries when the two European giants meet in Dallas for a place in the World Cup final.

Although this will be their first meeting at a FIFA World Cup, the two stars know each other well after facing off numerous times for club and country over the past two years.

Yamal holds the edge in recent meetings

The head-to-head record favors the Spanish teenager.

Mbappé and Yamal have faced each other 10 times across international competitions, the UEFA Champions League, LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.

Yamal has been on the winning side eight times, while Mbappé has celebrated victory just twice.

Spain has also defeated France in both recent international meetings between the two nations, eliminating Les Bleus in the UEFA Euro 2024 semifinal before winning another thrilling semifinal in the UEFA Nations League one year later.

Yamal scored in both victories, including a brace in the Nations League.

Mbappé arrives as the Golden Boot leader

Despite trailing in the head-to-head rivalry, Mbappé enters the semifinal in outstanding form.

The France captain leads the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot race with eight goals and three assists, edging Lionel Messi thanks to the assist tiebreaker after both players finished the quarterfinals with eight goals.

Mbappé also reached another personal milestone during France’s group-stage victory over Iraq, becoming France’s all-time leading scorer with 60 international goals in exactly 100 appearances.

His World Cup scoring record now stands at 16 goals, moving him within striking distance of Lionel Messi’s career total.

Yamal’s impact goes beyond goals

While Mbappé has dominated the scoring charts, Yamal has influenced games differently.

The Barcelona winger has scored only once during the tournament, but his creativity has made him one of Spain’s most dangerous attacking players.

His performances have continued to demonstrate why he remains one of the brightest young stars in world soccer despite turning just 18.

Yamal also became the first player aged 18 or younger to appear in more than five FIFA World Cup matches during a single tournament.

Speaking earlier in the competition, the Spanish star insisted individual statistics are secondary to team success.

“Not scoring really doesn’t frustrate me. If we win the World Cup, I don’t think people will care how many goals I’ve scored.”

Club rivalry adds another layer

Much of their recent history has been built through El Clásico.

Since Mbappé joined Real Madrid, the pair have met six times with Barcelona enjoying the upper hand in most encounters.

Yamal helped Barça lift two Spanish Super Cups and one Copa del Rey while also winning two of their three LaLiga meetings.

Mbappé, however, has consistently found the back of the net during those clashes, scoring nine goals across his 10 career meetings with Yamal compared to the Spaniard’s six.

A place in the World Cup final is on the line

Statistics and previous meetings will matter little once kickoff arrives in Dallas.

France will rely on the tournament’s most prolific scorer to continue his remarkable World Cup campaign, while Spain hopes Yamal can once again rise to the occasion on one of soccer’s biggest stages.

For Mbappé, the semifinal is another opportunity to strengthen his Golden Boot lead and move one step closer to another World Cup title.

For Yamal, it is the chance to continue building an already remarkable résumé and keep alive his dream of lifting the trophy in his first World Cup appearance.

Whatever happens, one of soccer’s most exciting rivalries is about to add another unforgettable chapter.
