Inter Toronto secured its first victory of the 2026 Canadian Premier League season, defeating Vancouver FC 1-0 at York Lions Stadium with an early goal from Gabriel Bitar proving decisive.

The result marks an important step for Inter Toronto after opening the campaign without a win, while Vancouver’s struggles continue with a third consecutive 1-0 defeat to start the season.

Head coach Mauro Eustáquio kept faith with the same starting XI that featured in the club’s opener, again deploying an aggressive 3-5-2 formation. Across the touchline, Vancouver FC manager Martin Nash introduced two changes, including a full debut for Aboubacar Traore and a midfield role for Emrick Fotsing.

Inter Toronto wasted little time asserting control. In the sixth minute, Shola Jimoh advanced down the left flank and delivered a dangerous ball into the area. A deflection redirected the play into Bitar’s path, and his attempt took another touch on its way through, wrong-footing goalkeeper Callum Irving and giving the hosts an early lead.

That goal shaped the match. Inter Toronto maintained attacking intent, but Vancouver gradually found rhythm as the first half progressed. The visitors created their first clear opportunity around the 30-minute mark, when Thierno Bah forced a save from Diego Urtiaga before Traore sent the rebound over the crossbar.

Bah threatened again in first-half stoppage time, but his effort from the edge of the box was blocked, allowing Inter Toronto to carry the 1-0 advantage into the break.

The second half shifted momentum toward Vancouver. Early in the restart, the visitors appealed for a penalty following a collision between Bah and Luke Singh inside the box. After a video review challenge initiated by Nash, the referee upheld the original decision, and play resumed without a spot kick.

Vancouver continued to press. In the 59th minute, Morey Doner found Traore at the back post, but the forward missed a close-range chance that could have leveled the match. The sequence reflected a period of sustained pressure, with Inter Toronto forced to defend deeper than in the opening stages.

Despite that pressure, Inter Toronto maintained its structure. Eustáquio introduced Ollie Bassett and Béni Badibanga in the 75th minute, looking to regain control and provide outlets in transition.

The final minutes tested the hosts’ defensive organization. In the 89th minute, Terran Campbell forced a strong save from Urtiaga with a volley inside the box, then followed with another attempt that drifted just wide.

Inter Toronto nearly sealed the result in stoppage time when Bassett and Jessé Costa broke forward with Irving off his line. The Vancouver goalkeeper recovered to disrupt the play, preventing a second goal and keeping the margin at one.

Unlike the previous week, when a late equalizer cost Inter Toronto valuable points, the team managed the closing stages effectively, holding its lead to secure all three points.

The performance highlighted a more balanced approach. While the early goal came from attacking initiative, the ability to absorb pressure late in the match provided a contrast to earlier defensive lapses.

For Vancouver FC, the result continues a difficult start to the season. Despite generating chances, the team has yet to find the net through three matches, with all losses coming by the same 1-0 scoreline.

Inter Toronto now turns its attention to its first road match of the season, set for April 25 against Cavalry FC at ATCO Field. The victory offers momentum, but also sets a benchmark for consistency as the campaign progresses.
