George Russell opened the 2026 Formula 1 season with victory at the Australian Grand Prix, leading a Mercedes one-two finish ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli in a race shaped by strategy and early incidents.
Russell crossed the line 2.9 seconds clear of Antonelli to secure the sixth win of his Formula 1 career, as Mercedes executed a one-stop strategy that ultimately proved decisive at Albert Park.
Early battle sets the tone
The race began with immediate drama as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc surged from fourth on the grid to take the lead, briefly getting ahead of Russell in the opening laps.
The two drivers traded positions early, with the front of the field tightly contested before strategy began to play a central role.
A Virtual Safety Car triggered by Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar stopping on track brought the first key decision point. Mercedes opted to pit both Russell and Antonelli, while Ferrari kept Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton out.
A second Virtual Safety Car, caused by the retirement of Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas, further complicated the strategic picture, with Ferrari continuing to extend their opening stints.
Mercedes strategy proves decisive
As the race unfolded, Ferrari’s approach suggested a longer run to the finish, while questions remained over whether Mercedes would need to stop again.
Instead, Russell and Antonelli managed their tyres effectively, maintaining track position without requiring a second stop.
Ferrari’s drivers were unable to close the gap in the closing stages, allowing Mercedes to secure a comfortable one-two finish to start the season.
Leclerc and Hamilton completed the podium positions in third and fourth, respectively.
Mixed fortunes across the grid
McLaren’s Lando Norris finished fifth as the team’s sole representative after Oscar Piastri spun before the start and was unable to take part in his home race.
Max Verstappen recovered from 20th on the grid to finish sixth, delivering one of the standout drives of the race following Hadjar’s early retirement for Red Bull.
Haas driver Ollie Bearman finished seventh, while Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad claimed eighth place and scored points on his Formula 1 debut.
Strong start for Mercedes in 2026 campaign
The result marks a strong opening statement for Mercedes, with both drivers delivering a composed and efficient performance in a race that required precise execution under changing conditions.
With Ferrari showing competitive pace but falling short strategically, the early balance of power in the 2026 season appears closely contested.
Russell’s victory and Antonelli’s runner-up finish provide Mercedes with immediate momentum as the championship gets underway.
