Canada’s Steven Dubois captured gold in the men’s 500 metres short track speed skating event Wednesday at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.

The 28-year-old from Terrebonne, Que., crossed the line in 40.835 seconds to secure the Olympic title. The Netherlands’ Melle van ’t Wout claimed silver, while compatriot Jens van ’t Wout earned bronze.

Montreal’s William Dandjinou, considered a pre-Games contender in multiple individual events, was assessed a penalty in the final and did not reach the podium.

The victory marks Dubois’s second medal of the Games, following the silver he earned in the mixed team relay earlier in the competition. It brings his career Olympic total to five medals.

Dubois entered Milano Cortina as the reigning world champion in both the 500m and 1,000m distances. He previously collected three medals at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. His bid for a 1,000m medal earlier this week ended after a fall in the preliminary round.

With the win, Canada’s medal count at Milano Cortina 2026 rises to 14, including four gold medals.
