TORONTO – Cody Ponce’s long-awaited return to Major League Baseball ended abruptly Monday night, as the Toronto Blue Jays starter was forced to leave his debut with a right knee injury in the third inning at Rogers Centre.

Making his first MLB appearance since 2021, Ponce exited the game on a medical cart after going down while attempting to field a ground ball. The Blue Jays later described the issue as “right knee discomfort,” with further evaluation expected following additional testing.

The sequence unfolded quickly. Earlier in the inning, Ponce had lost his footing on the mound, resulting in a balk after an awkward turn before delivering a pitch. Moments later, on a ground ball off the bat of Colorado’s Jake McCarthy, the right-hander moved toward first base to make the play.

As he tried to adjust his body after initially bobbling the ball, Ponce pulled up suddenly and reached for the back of his right leg before collapsing onto the infield dirt. The Blue Jays’ medical staff immediately rushed onto the field, followed by manager John Schneider, and the cart was brought out shortly after.

Ponce remained visibly in pain as he was helped to his feet and assisted off the field. The scene was a difficult one, particularly given the context surrounding his return to the majors.

The 30-year-old had not pitched in MLB since 2021, spending the past several seasons overseas working to rebuild his career. His resurgence included a standout 2025 campaign in the Korean Baseball Organization, where he posted a 1.89 ERA with 252 strikeouts over 180.2 innings. That performance earned him a three-year, $30 million contract with Toronto in the offseason.

Monday’s outing marked the first opportunity for Ponce to translate that success back to the major league level. Instead, it ended prematurely in a moment that immediately raised concerns about the severity of the injury.

The Blue Jays have not yet provided a timeline for Ponce’s recovery. Further updates are expected after imaging, including a possible MRI, is completed.
