Walker Zimmerman continues to make an early impact with Toronto FC, earning a spot on the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 5 following his decisive performance in the club’s 2-1 win over Columbus Crew at BMO Field.

The American centre back scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute, rising above the defence to head home a Djordje Mihailovic corner. The finish secured Toronto’s first home victory of the 2026 MLS season and capped off a strong all-around display from the veteran defender.

Zimmerman’s contribution went beyond the goal. He completed 33 passes, covered 9.51 kilometres and led the team with seven aerial duels, reinforcing his role as a key figure in both defensive organization and set-piece situations.

The goal marked Zimmerman’s first for Toronto FC since joining the club ahead of the 2026 campaign and the 27th of his MLS career. His presence has quickly added experience and stability to a backline that is part of a broader roster rebuild under head coach Robin Fraser.

The recognition is Zimmerman’s first MLS Team of the Matchday selection with Toronto FC and the 28th of his career in the league. He joins Richie Laryea as the only Toronto players to receive the honour so far this season.

Toronto FC’s win over Columbus extended the club’s positive run, building momentum after a late draw in their home opener the previous week. With Zimmerman now settling into the squad, his leadership and consistency are becoming increasingly visible in the team’s performances.
